Dumbbell Bicep Exercises
Dumbbells give the biceps two things a bar cannot. First, the hand can rotate: starting with the palm neutral and turning it up as you curl adds supination, which is the bicep's second job and which a fixed bar makes impossible. Second, the shoulder position becomes a variable. An incline curl puts the arm behind the body and stretches the long head; a preacher curl puts it in front and removes the stretch entirely; a standing curl sits between them.
The hammer curl is the other half of the page. Held with the palm facing in, the load shifts to the brachialis underneath the bicep and the brachioradialis in the forearm. Building the brachialis pushes the bicep up from below, which is why arms trained with both supinated and neutral grips look thicker than arms trained with curls alone. The Zottman curl combines the two in one rep: curl up supinated, rotate, then lower with the palm down.

Frequently asked questions
Hammer curls or regular curls for bigger arms?
Both, for different reasons. Regular supinated curls train the biceps directly. Hammer curls train the brachialis and forearm, which adds thickness to the arm and pushes the bicep up. Arms trained with only one grip end up looking narrower than they should.
Why do incline dumbbell curls feel so much harder?
Because lying back puts your arms behind your torso, which stretches the long head of the bicep before the rep even starts. Loading a muscle in a stretched position is harder and a strong growth stimulus, so expect to use noticeably less weight than standing.
Should I curl both arms at once or alternate?
Alternating lets you put full attention on each arm and effectively doubles the rest between reps on a side, so you can use more weight. Both at once is faster and more fatiguing. Neither is better for growth, so pick by whether you want time efficiency or load.
