Dumbbell Shoulder Exercises
The shoulder is three muscles doing three different jobs, and dumbbells are the only tool that trains all of them well. The front delt presses: seated overhead press, Arnold press, single-arm press, Z press. The side delt raises the arm out to the side, and the lateral raise is essentially the only exercise that loads it directly. The rear delt pulls the arm backward, which is what the rear delt fly and the laying reverse fly are for.
Most shoulders that look underdeveloped are missing the last two. Pressing alone builds the front delt, which is already getting work from every chest exercise you do. If you take one thing from this page, it is that lateral raises and rear delt flyes are not optional accessories. They are the exercises that make the difference, and they work best light and controlled rather than heavy and swung.

Frequently asked questions
How heavy should dumbbell lateral raises be?
Much lighter than people use. The side delt is a small muscle with a poor leverage angle, so if you need to swing the weight up or shrug to start the rep, it is too heavy. Ten to twenty reps with a weight you can raise slowly and stop at shoulder height is the right target.
Arnold press or standard dumbbell overhead press?
The Arnold press adds rotation, which brings the front delt through a longer range and adds some side delt at the top. The standard press lets you use more weight. Use the standard press as the strength movement and the Arnold press when you want more range at a lighter load.
What dumbbell exercise hits the rear delts?
The rear delt fly, bent over or lying face-down on an incline bench. The laying version is better for most people because the chest support stops you from using your lower back to swing the weights. Keep the elbows slightly bent and think about pulling the arms apart, not up.
Can I train shoulders with just dumbbells?
Completely. A press, a lateral raise and a rear delt fly cover all three heads, and a pair of dumbbells does all three. Nothing else is required for full shoulder development.
