Machine Quad Exercises
This is the deepest machine section in the library, because the quads are the muscle group machines serve best. A hack squat or pendulum squat fixes your torso and puts you in a near-perfect quad position with no balance demand, which lets you take a set genuinely to failure. The leg press does the same in a horizontal plane and handles the heaviest loads of anything here.
The leg extension is the only true quad isolation exercise in existence, with no hip involvement at all, which makes it uniquely good for finishing a session or for training around an injury. The belt squat loads the hips without any weight on the spine, which is why it is the go-to when your lower back needs a break. The cardio machines at the end of the list train the quads through volume rather than load.

Frequently asked questions
Leg press or hack squat for quads?
The hack squat is more quad-dominant, because the upright torso and fixed back pad keep the knees travelling forward through a deep range. The leg press lets you load heavier and is easier on the knees for many people. Running both is common.
Are leg extensions bad for your knees?
No, not for healthy knees. The research does not support that claim. They load the quad in a shortened position that squats do not reach, which makes them useful. If you have existing knee pain, reduce the range and the load rather than avoiding the exercise entirely.
Where should my feet go on the leg press for quads?
Lower on the platform and closer together. That increases knee flexion and keeps the quads doing the work. A high, wide foot position shifts the load onto the glutes and hamstrings instead.
