Machine Horizontal Leg Press

The horizontal leg press seats you upright with your back against a pad and your feet on a plate that travels roughly level. You release the safeties, let the knees bend until the thighs come close to the chest, then press the plate away without snapping the knees straight. The quadriceps do most of the work, with glutes and hamstrings extending the hips and the calves and trunk supporting. Foot position changes the split: driving through the heels with the feet higher pulls in more glute, driving through the balls of the feet biases the quads.

How to do the Machine Horizontal Leg Press

  1. Set the seat so your knees start bent to about 90 degrees.
  2. Sit with your back and hips flat against the pad.
  3. Place your feet on the plate at shoulder width and grip the handles.
  4. Release the safeties and press the plate out to almost straight legs.
  5. Bend the knees and let the plate travel back under control.
  6. Press back out just short of lockout and repeat.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the Machine Horizontal Leg Press work?

The Machine Horizontal Leg Press trains the quads as the main target. Expect the glutes, hamstrings, calves, core, and adductors to take some of the load as well.

What equipment do I need for the Machine Horizontal Leg Press?

Only a machine. Nothing beyond that is required to run the movement the way it is described above.

Is the Machine Horizontal Leg Press suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Machine Horizontal Leg Press is rated beginner, and the machine holds the path for you, so there is little to get wrong once the seat and the pin are set.

Can I do the Machine Horizontal Leg Press at home?

Only if your home setup runs to a machine. Most do not, so this is usually a gym movement. The alternatives below cover the same muscles with kit you are more likely to have.

How many sets and reps of the Machine Horizontal Leg Press should I do?

Three to five sets of 5 to 10 reps. Rest two to three minutes: squats tire the whole body, and a rushed second set is where depth and bracing fall apart.

What are good alternatives to the Machine Horizontal Leg Press?

Band Squat, Bodyweight Box Squat, and Dumbbell Front Squat train the same primary muscles as the Machine Horizontal Leg Press. Pick whichever one matches the equipment in front of you.
