Kettlebell Swing

The kettlebell swing is the most recognized kettlebell exercise in the world. It's an explosive hip hinge where the lifter snaps the hips forward to swing a kettlebell from between the legs up to chest height, then lets gravity reload the next rep. The glutes and hamstrings produce the power, the lower back stabilizes, and the grip and core hold everything together.

How to do the Kettlebell Swing

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and a kettlebell on the floor about a foot in front of you.
  2. Hinge at the hips, grip the handle with both hands, and tilt the bell back toward you.
  3. Hike the kettlebell back between your legs, keeping your back flat and arms relaxed.
  4. Snap your hips forward explosively to launch the kettlebell up to chest height with straight arms.
  5. Let the bell float briefly at the top, then let it fall back down and load the next hinge.
  6. Catch the bell between your legs with a soft hinge and immediately drive into the next rep.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the Kettlebell Swing work?

The Kettlebell Swing trains the glutes and hamstrings as the main targets. Expect the core to take some of the load as well.

What equipment do I need for the Kettlebell Swing?

Only a kettlebell. Nothing beyond that is required to run the movement the way it is described above.

Is the Kettlebell Swing suitable for beginners?

With some training behind you. The Kettlebell Swing is rated intermediate, which means the setup matters as much as the effort. It is a reasonable first month goal rather than a first session one, and the alternatives below are the easier way in.

Can I do the Kettlebell Swing at home?

Yes, if you own a kettlebell. That is the whole requirement, and it is the reason this one travels well between a home setup and a gym floor.

How many sets and reps of the Kettlebell Swing should I do?

Three to five sets of 5 to 8 reps for strength, or 8 to 12 for size. A hinge is heavy on the lower back, so leave a rep in the tank and rest two to three minutes between sets.

What are good alternatives to the Kettlebell Swing?

Barbell Romanian Deadlift, Deficit Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift, and Band Romanian Deadlift train the same primary muscles as the Kettlebell Swing. Pick whichever one matches the equipment in front of you.
