Jump Rope

Rope jumping is a rhythmic, low-amplitude bounce driven mainly by the calves and the elastic tissue around the ankle. Ground-contact measurements put the calf group and tibialis anterior well ahead in the two-foot bounce, while the alternating-foot version moves a large share of the work to the hip flexors and thigh. Each landing stretches and then rebounds the calf and Achilles complex, which is why repeated skipping counts as low-level stretch-shortening work as well as a cardio staple. The arms stay close to the body and the wrists do the turning.

How to do the Jump Rope

  1. Stand on the middle of the rope and check the handles reach your armpits.
  2. Take an athletic stance with your chest lifted and shoulders back.
  3. Hold the handles close to your body with your elbows slightly bent.
  4. Turn the rope with your wrists rather than swinging from the shoulders.
  5. Hop only as high as the rope needs, meeting the floor through the ball of the foot.
  6. Let the heel settle after each contact and keep the knees soft.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the Jump Rope work?

The Jump Rope trains the calves as the main target. Expect the quads, shoulders, and core to take some of the load as well.

What equipment do I need for the Jump Rope?

None. The Jump Rope is a bodyweight movement, so your own weight is the resistance and floor space is the only requirement.

Is the Jump Rope suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Jump Rope is rated beginner: you are the load, so there is no weight to get wrong. Add reps or time only once the position holds from the first of them to the last.

Can I do the Jump Rope at home?

Yes, anywhere. There is nothing to buy and nothing to set up, which makes the Jump Rope one of the movements worth keeping for days you never reach a gym.

How many sets and reps of the Jump Rope should I do?

Three to five sets of 3 to 6 reps, fully rested. Every rep should be as sharp as the first, so stop the set the moment height or speed drops.

What are good alternatives to the Jump Rope?

Treadmill Run, Running Cooldown, and Dumbbell Single Leg Calf Raise train the same primary muscles as the Jump Rope. Pick whichever one matches the equipment in front of you.
