Seated Calf Raise

The seated calf raise works plantar flexion with the knee bent to roughly a right angle. In this version the load is a dumbbell resting across the thigh just behind the knee, with the forefoot on the floor or a low block. Heels drop into a full stretch, then push up as high as the ankle allows. The bent knee shortens the gastrocnemius so the soleus takes the larger share; with the knee straight the gastrocnemius sits at long length and does more. Training data shows far greater gastrocnemius growth from knee-extended calf work, while soleus growth is similar either way.

How to do the Seated Calf Raise

  1. Sit on a bench or box with your feet flat and your knees bent to about 90 degrees.
  2. Rest a dumbbell vertically on each thigh, close to the knee.
  3. Hold the dumbbells steady with your hands and sit tall.
  4. Place the balls of your feet on a low block if you have one.
  5. Let your heels drop until the calves are fully stretched.
  6. Push through the balls of your feet, squeeze at the top and lower slowly.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the Seated Calf Raise work?

The Seated Calf Raise trains the calves, and little else. No other group takes a meaningful share of the load, which is what makes this a clean way to target the calves directly.

What equipment do I need for the Seated Calf Raise?

The Seated Calf Raise needs a dumbbell. Nothing beyond that is required to run the movement the way it is described above.

Is the Seated Calf Raise suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Seated Calf Raise is rated beginner: the pattern is quick to pick up and forgiving when a rep drifts. Start light and add weight once the form repeats itself without you thinking about it.

Can I do the Seated Calf Raise at home?

Yes, if you own a dumbbell. That is the whole requirement, and it is the reason this one travels well between a home setup and a gym floor.

How many sets and reps of the Seated Calf Raise should I do?

Three to four sets of 10 to 15 reps. Isolation work responds to reps and a controlled tempo rather than load, so stop each set a rep or two short of failure and keep the weight honest.

What are good alternatives to the Seated Calf Raise?

Bodyweight Donkey Calf Raise, Calf Press, and Kettlebell Calf Raise train the same primary muscles as the Seated Calf Raise. Pick whichever one matches the equipment in front of you.
